Prescriptive targets provide specific gain and output across frequencies to match a person’s hearing loss in a way that makes speech audible while keeping loudness within comfortable limits. NAL-NL2 and DSL v5 are two widely used strategies that translate the audiogram into a target amplification plan. In verification, these targets guide what the hearing aid should deliver at each frequency, so the goal is to have the real-ear (or equivalent) aided output line up with the target across the speech spectrum. If measurements fall short or overshoot, the fitting is adjusted to bring the output onto target, ensuring audibility of soft speech and comfortable loudness for louder sounds.
